Something in the Grass

She padded silently through the tall grass, taking care to avoid stepping over the imaginary line that marked the end of one property and the beginning of the next. She shook her head as she wandered right along the line. So many times her father had fought with the neighbouring farmer about exactly where the border was. A breeze picked up, rustling her fur and the grass around her. A smile stretched across her muzzle and she started to run. Each blade of grass hit and tickled her face. She was nearing the house again before she came back from her oblivious state. Stopping, she lay down on the ground. She heard her brother calling out her name. Of course he's the only one looking for me. she thought silently. Emmelyn had often wondered if her parents really cared about her. Her father had wanted another son. She was going to shift back to go respond, when she heard something rustling in the grass. And it wasn't the wind. She stood back up and then remained motionless, trying to identify what was so close to her family and wondering if it would try and hurt anyone.
